The Staff Senate is one of the ways all non-faculty salaried and non-student wage staff can participate in shared governance at Virginia Tech. The Senate is made up of elected representatives from each college and administrative area of the university.

The Senate meets on the third Thursday of each month, from Noon-1:00 pm. All non-faculty salaried and non-student wage staff are welcome to attend any meeting.

Virginia Tech Staff Senate releases report on current state of affordable childcare

Finding adequate and affordable childcare is a long-standing problem for Virginia Tech employees and students. It is especially a problem for staff members in the lower pay bands. Childcare availability also has an impact on attracting and retaining staff and faculty. To address this issue, the Virginia Tech Staff Senate formed an ad hoc committee in the spring of 2018 to look at issues surrounding access to affordable child care for staff and others at Virginia Tech.

The committee produced a report of its findings, which was presented by Robert Sebek, president of the Staff Senate, at the November 4, 2018, meeting of the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors. The committee researched what other higher education institutions inside and outside Virginia have implemented to increase access to child care, investigated potential sources of funding for new child care initiatives, and examined how to get more people trained and certified to work in child care facilities. This report provides the information gathered on the current state of affordable child care in the New River Valley and offers several proposals the university could implement.
