A message to Virginia Tech staff and wage employees

Dear Virginia Tech staff and wage employees,

I hope you and your families are safe and well.

Each year we set aside a day to bring all of you together and express the university's appreciation for your hard work and commitment. Today, May 20, would have been that day, and this year our staff and wage employees deserve to be celebrated more than ever for supporting Virginia Tech's continuing operation while also protecting the health and safety of our community during the COVID-19 pandemic. I'm sorry that the need to maintain precautions compelled us to cancel this special day.

To our essential employees who are working on the front lines every day, a special thank you. Because of you, we can continue to maintain our mission critical functions. Your commitment truly reflects the spirt of our motto, Ut Prosim (That I May Serve).

This experience has changed our lives and our work in ways we couldn't have imagined just a few months ago. More challenges lie ahead as we evaluate the impact of COVID-19 on the university and develop a sustainable plan to safely return to full operation and continue our academic, research, and outreach missions.

We will get through this and be stronger as a result, thanks in great measure to you. You have done a tremendous job and shown great flexibility and resilience during this challenging time. I see the impact of your work, and want to personally express my appreciation and gratitude. I look forward to the time when we can come together again and give you the celebration and recognition you deserve.

Until that day, on behalf of the entire university community, thank you.

Tim Sands,

Staff Senate

The Staff Senate is one of the ways all salaried staff (University and Classified) and regular wage staff can participate in shared governance at Virginia Tech. The Senate is made up of elected representatives from each college and administrative area of the university.

The Senate normally meets on the third Thursday of each month, from Noon-1:00 pm. All non-faculty salaried and non-student wage staff are welcome to attend any meeting. The March and April meetings were canceled and the May meeting will fully take place on Zoom.
